Who else is excited for 2018?! Last year was not at the top of my favourite years ever list, so I wasn’t disappointed to watch it fade away!
A new year with a fresh start is exactly what I needed. Every year I choose a word of the year, but this year I struggled to find one. Everything seemed so made up or contrived in an effort to sound interesting or exciting. Then the other night I was sitting on the couch and I thought about what I wanted for a new year. Instantly, I thought
I just want to be better!
So that’s my word for the year– BETTER. I want to be a better person; a better wife; a better mom; and a better friend. I want to do better at helping others; at working hard; and at being organized. I want to be a better runner; a better gym goer and a better eater (as in healthy food. I have the general eating a lot part down pat!).
I don’t want to be perfect or have a set of goals that I need to check off, but instead, I just want to be better and do better than I did last year. If I fail in January, then I have 11 more chances to be better.
Along with my personal goals, I also plan to be a better blogger. I will be attempting to share more about my family and life on a daily basis as well as continuing to share my running and fitness journey. I started this blog because I genuinely love to write, so I hope to do better at sharing that love with you!
In an effort to be better at blogging, I will be moving my Workout Wednesday posts to Monday so that it is easier to recap my workout week after my long weekend runs.
Before Christmas, Anson and I joined Fit4less. It is so cheap that we couldn’t resist and it is less than 3km from our house. So far it has been a worthwhile investment for both of us. This week I hit the gym a lot and am pretty excited for a rest day today. I went to the library yesterday with the girls and am currently obsessed with Karin Slaughter’s books. Hopefully, I can motivate myself to do more than read today!
Without further ado, here is my workout week in review:
Monday, January 1: 15km run on the treadmill + shoulder workout. I planned to run outside and even started to. My new Garmin didn’t like the cold and I got really frustrated trying to make it work.
I got too irritated and went home, changed my clothes and drove to the gym. Then I got on the treadmill and whined via text to Maria about how horrific it was. I also text my sister telling her that I was pretty sure I had been running for 6 hours. (Obviously, I don’t ever exaggerate or get overly dramatic about anything….) I survived and started 2018 with a long run!
Tuesday, January 2: 30 minutes cardio + back/bicep weight routine. Wow. I am weak!! One of my goals is to do a lot more strength training this year. I actually really enjoy it–once I get into the routine.
Wednesday, January 3: 6km total via speed workout on the treadmill. I like speedwork on the treadmill because I don’t have to rely on myself to hit the right paces. lol.
Thursday, January 4: 6km easy run + shoulders again. Oops. I’m still trying to figure out my weight training days and how to fit them in with my run days. I usually do shoulders with leg day which I totally skipped this week. It’s a work in progress!
Friday, January 5: 6km total via speed workout on the treadmill. It was supposed to be a hill workout outside, but the weather was insane here (-36 with the wind?!), so Michelle graciously gave me an alternative to dying of frostbite outside!
Saturday, January 6: 15 minutes cardio (10 min walk on treadmill/5 min row machine) + chest/tricep workout. I had to request help changing my clothes on Sunday so I guess that workout went well!
Sunday, January 7: 18km long slow run. The weather improved a lot but it was windy! I still was so glad I did this run on Sunday instead of pushing it until today!
I can’t believe I ran 51 kilometres this week and I feel as great as I do. I’m still as slow as a turtle, but I am trying to focus on just getting the distances and work done without paying attention to my pace. I know it takes time to build back up, so I am trying to focus on just making that happen!
What was your first workout week of 2018 like?
Does anyone else have a word for the year?
Is anyone disappointed that 2017 is over? I feel like everyone was ready to move on to 2018!
