Tomorrow my oldest daughter turns 14. She is also graduating from grade 8 this month and moving on to high school this fall.
These milestones have me thinking a lot about how I’m actually getting older! WHAT?! When did that happen?!
The first birthday I remember either of my parents having was when my dad turned 30. My dad (much like me!) hated surprises more than anything, so we threw him a giant surprise party. He pulled into the driveway to a massive banner hanging over the garage that said, “Hip, Hip, Hooray! Greg’s 30 Today!” I remember his sheepish smile that was probably trying to mask his inner embarrasment, but as a kid I thought it was fantastic! I also thought my dad was SO OLD!
When I turned 30, Anson surprised me and took me to New York City for a couple of days. New York City is one of my favourite places on earth and seeing it during the Christmas season was magical. We went to see the Radio City Rockettes perform and then also hit Broadway to see “West Side Story” and “Mamma Mia.” (We love a good theatre show!) I took my picture with Santa at Macy’s and we had a blast. I definitely didn’t feel remotely old. 30 felt so young!
This year I will turn 37 and I still don’t feel old. I definitely feel more mature and like I’ve gained a lot of life experience and wisdom, but old? No way!
The older I get, the less I care what people think which has definitely made me a little more carefree and fun. You don’t like what I’m wearing? That’s nice. You don’t think I should let my kids do something? Mind your own business, thanks. And so on…..
A few weeks ago, Anson and I went to see the band Sigur Ros perform. Sadly, they didn’t perform my favourite song of theirs but that hasn’t stopped me from watching the video countless times lately! “Hoppipolla” is Icelandic for “hopping in puddles.” While the lyrics are mainly in Icelandic, the video clearly shows the message! I truly hope that as I grow older in age, my spirit grows younger and younger! Growing older doesn’t mean we have to actually act older! I hope you find some puddles to jump in today!
