I posted this on my Instagram when I was in Istanbul and just wanted to share it here as well because this story touched me more than I can explain. Always remember that people are watching and listening, even when we don’t think they are. I may not agree with everything our Prime Minister does, but I would be a fool to not recognize the obvious love he has for the people of the world. I see that and it means so much to me as a Canadian. As someone who lives in a household of 5 with a total of 11 passports between us, it is easy to reply, “Canadian,” when we are asked our citizenship. Canada isn’t perfect, but Canada loves people and that cannot be denied.
Here is what I posted while still in Istanbul last month:
On our last night in Turkey, we stopped into this shop as we were walking back to our hotel. It was after midnight but for some reason they were still open. Anson wanted to get some chocolate covered almonds & some Turkish Delight to take home. We were a little bit short on Liras & couldn’t pay with a card as their machine shuts down at midnight. I asked if they wanted a Canadian ten dollar bill to make up the difference & as one man was googling the exchange rate, the man in this picture commented to Anson that we have a lot of Syrians in our country. Anson agreed & the man, who’s name is Mike, asked him if he likes Syrians. Anson said, “yes!” Mike asked him again & told him to be honest if he really liked them in his country. Anson assured him he likes the Syrian people and told him that he thinks it’s great that we have them in Canada. Mike then told us that he is actually Syrian from Damascus. As he passed us our bag of treats he told us that he likes us because our country loves the Syrian people. His voice was full of emotion as he spoke & I asked if we could take a picture with him because I wanted to share it. Maybe we think the world out there doesn’t notice how we treat others, but they do. Love always and be kind. Hatred never solves anything.
