I always knew what the Olympic Games were but I distinctly remember the year I developed a fierce love of the Games! I was in my last year of high school during the Winter Games of 1998 that took place in Nagano, Japan. I got up in the middle of the night to watch the hockey games, I covered my entire bedroom door with newspaper cut outs of articles about the athletes and I developed a huge crush on Ross Rebagliati, the Canadian snowboarder! (Considering he was almost disqualified for testing positive for marijuana, I’m not sure that’s my proudest achievement!)
In 2010 we were traveling in Florida during the Olympics and ended up watching the gold medal hockey game between the US and Canada on my Blackberry. Anson was driving so I held my phone up so we could both see. I am sure almost all of Florida could hear us screaming when Canada won the gold!
While I love watching the different events, I almost love hearing the stories about different athletes even more. All they have gone through in the background is what is really inspiring about them–not just the few minutes we see them competing.
As I have gotten more involved in running this year, I have started to become more familiar with the Canadian Olympians. While I am cheering for every single one of them, Krista DuChene is one I am really rooting for! She is a wife, a mom of 3, a Christian and a marathoner. Her competitiveness yet calmness of spirit is so inspiring to me!
I have watched this video countless times and for some reason, it makes me tear up every time. I hope you love it as much as I do! Krista races Sunday, August 14, and I will be cheering for her!
Who are you cheering for this Olympics? (I also love watching Michael Phelps swim & can’t help but cheer for him!)
